Here are the four questions you should ask to find out which real estate agent is right for you.
Wow, there are so many Realtors out there! Since they’re not all equal in experience and market expertise, how in the world can you tell the difference between them? Here’s what you need to ask if you want to find the best Realtor for your transaction:
The very first thing is to ask a real estate agent is how much experience they have. The average agent sells fewer than six homes per year, meaning they could have sold zero last year! Real estate is so complex that a person with that little experience can get you both into trouble.
The next set of things to ask are if they’re part of a team, how they’ll stay in touch with you, and what their systems and processes are. This will tell you if they have a plan or not. This is a massive investment for you, and some people feel extremely stressed by this process. Either way, you need to know what to expect from your real estate agent. These questions will help you figure out if they’re a good match for you. Remember, there are tons of real estate agents! You can choose who is best for you to work with.
“The average agent sells fewer than six homes per year.”
Then ask whether they offer any guarantees. This will show you how much they’re willing to stand behind their work. For example: Are you willing to guarantee my home will sell, or are you willing to buy this house if it doesn’t sell? It’s okay if the answer is no, but it’s valuable information to know.
Another thing to ask about is their track record, such as what their sale price-to-list price ratio is. You may come in with a preconceived notion about price, and so will your agent. Again, you should ask about their experience in this arena.
Lastly, ask to speak to three people who recently worked with the agent. You can look online as well, but by asking you can talk to a real customer who can say whether they would choose this agent again or not. If it were me, I would ask to speak to their last three clients, so you get a better sampling, not just their three most positive cases (because it could even be a family member of theirs). You can hear what it’s like to work with this Realtor. Do they really call you on Tuesdays when they said they will? If something goes wrong, how do they handle it? And so on.
You want the relationship between you and your real estate agent to be an excellent one. No matter who you hire, this will be a stressful process, but it can also be fun! I recently hired an agent in another state and we talked about all four of these things, so I know it can help you choose who is best for you.
