If you have a few thousand dollars to spend on improvements, one thing to do is paint. Fresh paint is worth every penny you spend on it. The easiest, most cost-effective thing you can do to help your house sell is paint with neutrals. However, only paint now if you’re selling soon.
The kitchen and bathrooms are where you’ll get the most money back when you sell.
If you’re planning to stay in your home for a couple of years or more and want to enjoy your spruces for a while, consider upgrading the bathrooms or the kitchen—those are where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Sometimes you’ll get all your money back, but sometimes you’ll just get a portion. If you have $20,000 to $30,000, you can redo the entire kitchen, or if you only have a few thousand, you can get new appliances or install great countertops. Then maybe you’ll update the floor of the bathroom or even renovate the whole thing if you have the money.
